Induction There are links below to two possible lessons which can be used when the Year 6 pupils visit for their induction day(s) in July. Pyramid Numbers is
based around the simple concept of adding two numbers to find
the number above. There are extension ideas and guidance
for the teacher. These have been used successfully at St
Alban's and Westbourne. Ice Cream Flavours
looks at the number of combinations and permutations of
selecting two or more ice cream flavours and includes guidance
for the teacher. |

Transition As pupils come to terms with their new school, it is essential to continue to build their mathematical skills. Year 7 teachers need to know what their pupils can already do. Many pupils now leave Year 6 with personal targets, records and a history of intervention. This body of information can help secondary teachers to make a quick start on work that is well matched to pupils' capabilities. The 'clean-sheet' approach is too slow, and allows pupils to coast or to fall back when they need to be challenged. As a minimum, teachers of Year 7 classes should survey the information available to them about the mathematical attainment of |

incoming pupils to help plan in advance the work of the first term, and then review individual records more closely when staff have had three or four weeks of experience with individual pupils. This alerts them to unexpected changes in performance which need to be resolved and enables them to adjust teaching expectations accordingly. It is important to have a record sheet that is easy to complete for the Year 6 teacher and informs their teaching as well as being easy to interpret by the Year 7 teacher. The document can be used for any year group as it assessing against the key objectives. |
