YouTube is a rich source of video clips that can be used to introduce or exemplify a topic. The materials below have been chosen because they are interesting and not necessarily for their relevance in a teaching context other than perhaps to provide that sense of awe that is so often missing in the classroom however hard we try.

Downloading YouTube Clips

There are many ways to do this but the following is one method that has worked for me and costs nothing:

Step 1:  You will need to download a small piece of software called YouTube Downloader that is free from the Internet, you can either choose to save it on your desktop or somewhere else convenient (it is about 8MB) and then click on the icon to install the software or you can select run in which case it will install it directly onto the computer: Click here to download.

Step 2: Open the program YouTube Downloader

Step 3: Go to www.youtube.com and select the clip you want to download

Step 4: Return to YouTube Downloader and copy and paste the url address such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWHcbBm19KA

Step 5: Select where you want the file to go by clicking on the folder icon on the far right

Step 6: Click on OK

Step 7: The file will be saved as an MP4 file

Step 8: To convert it to another form such as avi which windows media player plays you just select the Convert video option at the bottom and find the file and select the download option before pressing OK

Windows Media Player can be downloaded free by Clicking Here

VLC Media Player Portable which is packaged as a portable application, so you can take your audio and video files along with everything you need to play them on the go. You can place it on your USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive or a CD and use it on any computer. Using this application means that you do not need to change the files to avi format

Go to http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
Click on the large Download button
If it appears Click on the yellow warning box at the top of the screen to allow the file to be downloaded
Select Run when asked
Select where you want the application to be placed this can be on your desktop or your pen drive ...
Note it can be copied and placed in other places afterwards.
When it has been downloaded, click on the icon and select file open and then browse for your files ...
